firefox and bookmarklets

week 11
This was a pretty interesting week’s activity actually.
For the firefox add-on, I found a neat extension which puts English words into Russian (cyrillic script) and also Russian into English. it also puts transliterated russian into cyrillic script. You can turn it off and on as you need it. Way cool. I took Russian in university for 2 years and still catalog Russian and other Slavic languages. It was amazing how many diverse add-ons are available.
Kelly helped me with the bookmarklet stuff, we couldn’t get it down in the Wong classroom, so I did it alone at my desk. I searched Troy Glaus from the Blue Jays webpage in Morris!!! that’s pretty cool too. I can see where I could use that at work, where I find a corporate or personal name that I want to add to the Morris record that I am cataloguing, I can do the search much faster this way.

week 12
my favourite activities was the Google Pro and RSS feeds ones. my kids have a website where they post photos, so I know right away when they’ve added any.
I seriously disliked putting anything on the web, even limited to the library, about myself.
I am only working in the library about one day a week, sometimes 2. I still have 5 days a week of work and I’m planning/coordinating a lot of changes for my fellow staff in my unit. they may spend inordinate amounts of time on this, but I couldn’t. Kelly Has been absolutely wonderful in giving me help with this. God Bless you Kelly!!!!!

week 9
I had a look at MySpace. this is where my daughter has a page apparently. It also looks very sociable and a way for people to connect with similar likes (if you want to go that public with them).

week 9
I worked on Facebook with Kelly here in the Wong classroom. We had difficulty with getting everything to work. The friends feed isn’t working. I can see where this would be interesting site, but I have serious privacy issues for myself. I do not want to have a page or pictures in a facebook. I looked through a lot of pages (they all seem to have advertising on them!). If I were a trusting soul, this may look like fun or a social thing. but I plan to delete this as soon as possible. ko
Google Docs

week 8
Wow!!! I really like Google Docs and spreadsheets. I created a document and added a collaborator. this would really be great for people who all want input into the document. I tried the bold and italic and other buttons, it was very easy to pick up. Would be great for doing stuff at home when there are problems with the regular software (which happens regularly as you want to make a deadline). tho I really like the sharing part. Doing a spreadsheet would also be easier. Actually, I may prefer this to Microsoft Word, as I hate using that program. Wordperfect is my favourite, but we don’t have it at home. This is good. I would also recommend this one!
Discovering 2.0

week 6 and 7.
I fully intended to get caught up. I went to sessions with Alex, Amanda and Kelly. People around me at work were also helpful. This is when I got my delicious bookmarks done.

Week 5.
I put a picture from flickr onto my blog earlier. I failed to mention that I also configured my computer for the delicious bookmarks and I have added bookmarks to Delicious since I did it for my homework. Delicious is handy for finding my favourite sites when I’m at my mum’s or at home computer. I’d recommend it.
wikis & RSS feeds
May 10, 2007
week 3 and week 4.
I use RSS feeds in my work. We need to know when new titles are added to a site, so we can catalog them. I also just had information from a private RSS feed that my favourte singer has a new CD coming out on May 15th, so I pre-ordered it for my mother’s day present. So I know how useful RSS feeds can be. I have them configured so that they display on my Internet Explorer screen with my bookmarks.
I made a wiki page on both sites. PB has “doing my homework” and Paint is “Loser Jays” we use the PB one for our wiki for work. I put new procedures onto the wiki and then other staff can make changes or add comments for other staff. we also post updates that we want all of us to know and we need to be able to find again. I thus prefer the PB option because I’m more used to it but also we don’t need the navigation bar for this purpose. I can use where that would be good for saving stuff from various committees.
games
April 20, 2007
Went to the gaming session this afternoon with Kelly and Amanda. I appreciate that some people really enjoy and expend a lot of time and effort on this. I am not personally interested in it. I enjoy Spider Solitaire and download Websudoku puzzles. I thought I’d like the Dance Revolution game, but unfortunately, I find that my eyesight is not good enough to try it. I cannot focus on the arrows on the top left of the screen if there are so many other things moving on the screen. This is much of the reason that I cannot drive either. I’ve seen elaborate Sim City landscapes and set-ups and think Second Life is much like a wide open version of this. I have never wanted to try it myself. I avoid watching television and do not like to (read physically can’t) look at a monitor for any length of time either.
I wonder why a student would ask a reference question in Second Life. If they are trying to work on an assignment, why are they online there? and if most of our users of e-resources are in the wee hours, seems like that is when the e-reference should be offered (which I would never recommend!)
Many students (not all) use games and virtual worlds, so bringing them into the library to play sounds nice. Would need to reach out to the non-gamers as well, use other carrots to draw them out. (like live music or displays of student work, etc.) The dance-off with librarians would be better set in the MUSC big hall, or elsewhere, like Clubfest.
This post is for week 10, even though I’m way behind in the stuff for other weeks.
session help
March 28, 2007
I asked Alex and Kelly for help this week. Very disappointed in the flickr images of my hometown. but sent a flower picture out finally. we use RSS’s and a wiki in my department already and I use blogs by another name for CAW communications. ko
